Committee Purpose and Responsibilities

The UA Homecoming Steering and Advisory Committee shall be responsible for advising and evaluating the planning, promoting and execution of campus-wide activities and events, as well as student-targeted programming annually held as a part of The University of Alabama Homecoming experience. The committee also oversees the UA Student Homecoming Board, which executes and implements the events and activities mentioned above.

Membership

  • The committee members are appointed annually by the UA Homecoming Steering and Advisory Committee chair and the Office of the Vice President for Student Life
  • Annually the chair will be made up of one staff member from the Division of Student Life
  • The chair will extend invitations or accept appointments for participation on this committee
  • Student Liaison spots will be appointed by the Chair through an open application process held each year
    • Liaison members cannot also hold other roles or positions on the committee or the UA Homecoming Student Board
    • Liaison members should be enrolled students at The University of Alabama
    • Must have at least a 2.5 GPA or higher

Terms of Office

  • Committee Members – One year or until a replacement is selected by steering committee in August
  • Liaison Members – One year term

Standard Meeting Time

A schedule of meetings will be determined by the chair(s) and will be distributed to the committee. The committee will plan to meet once per month from February-October (or another fall date, depending on which month UA Homecoming is held) for the purpose of providing advisement and support to the of planning, marketing and execution strategies for annual Homecoming activities. Meetings to ensure the implementation of established Homecoming plans and to ensure awareness are to be held early in the fall semester. Meetings should be held to provide feedback and support on coordination for a successful Homecoming. A follow-up meeting should be held shortly after Homecoming to assess the success of activities. The intent shall be to identify both successes and concerns with the goal of continuous improvement for future homecoming celebrations.

Roster

The UA Homecoming Steering and Advisory Committee roster shall be made up of representatives from areas who support plans for campus-wide and student-centered activities during Homecoming Week.

Faculty/Staff Essay Readers & Interview Members

Students can nominate faculty and staff to be members of the UA Homecoming Steering and Advisory Committee.  This will traditionally require a commitment of time and effort between August and December.  Faculty/Staff who are nominated will be reviewed and potentially contacted to be a part of the committee.  Committee involvement will be weighed against needs to represent a variety of campus affinity groups and also based on the willingness and interest of the faculty or staff member who may be nominated.

Student Liaison Application

The Student Liaison position, which will represent targeted student interests on the UA Homecoming Steering and Advisory Committee, will traditionally requires a commitment of time and effort between April 2023 and December 2023; Students will be selected through an application process. The individual applying to this position should have interest in the following areas:

  • Ability to contribute logical plans and ideas pertaining to the campus-wide and student experiences for UA Homecoming
  • Desire to offer feedback and support to Homecoming events and programs, where needed
  • Ability to be reasonable, work well with others and work through processes where consensus might be needed
  • Represent Demographics and areas and do the work to understand the needs of groups that you might represent as a member of the committee
  • Serve on an contribute through committee assignments as needed
  • Open to working with a group that consists of faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
